Special Blog Episode

Welcome to Growing Weekdays, where I share with you an idea that will guide you throughout your life! This will help you manifest your inner being through deep realizations. Today we are going to talk about my personal context of Walter Ong's article.

A Personal context of Walter Ong, “Writing is a Technology That Restructures Thought”

A world without writing may involve chaos and drastic changes that eradicate one’s ideas deep within. Writing is as important as living because it unfastens the full truth and intensifies unspoken perceptions. A world without writing will rely only on speaking but the article does not eliminate the importance of oral communication because both matters will never be separated. Walter Ong, states that oral communication focuses more on a discussion that is temporary while written words apply analysis and explanations that examines the future.

On the other hand, Plato describes writing as artificial because it follows rules that include claims and evidence which may be considered less connected to personal memory. However, Ong disproved Plato’s idea on writing that weakens a person’s mind because Ong believes that writing is a tool that composes our thoughts that go beyond our initial idea. Writing does not just transfer ideas to the reader but it distances one’s individuality to analyze and make his or her judgment to the written texts. Oral Communication simply conveys a message while writing allows a person to think critically which develops one’s new thought. But Ong understood Plato's idea because he believes that each one of us has a different way of thinking. But one thing I disagree with Ong’s notion was when he stated that writing can also be compared to media wherein if you post something on it, it stays there forever. In the generation of today, blogs and some journals already encourage discussions, comments, and suggestions in the media. And this is due to the advancement of today's stage.

In conclusion, I truly agree with Ong’s ideas about the importance of writing unwrap the inner voice. Without it, life may be a dreadful place to live in. Hence, we must appreciate its existence and value its gravity that shapes our whole identity.

Till next time,
Ella
